WHEN THE TORNADO HIT HANCOCK & DEPOSIT

SATURDAY, JULY 18, 2026 · EF-1 TORNADO, WINDS NEAR 95 MPH

On July 18th an EF-1 tornado cut a 16-mile path from Sanford through Hancock, dropping trees onto homes, roads, and power lines. Hancock declared a state of emergency before the sky had even cleared. Within hours our crew was out with the saws, the bucket truck, and the chipper, opening driveways and getting trees off houses for neighbors we've known our whole lives. That's what a small community is all about: when the storm hits, you show up, and we kept showing up until the roads were clear.

Deposit got its name because logs were deposited into the West Branch of the Delaware and floated downstream to market. Logging isn't just what we do here — it's why the town exists. Finnerty Logging & Tree Service carries that trade forward: professional logging, tree removal, and tree care for homeowners, farms, and woodlot owners across Broome and Delaware counties.

Owner Mike Finnerty is a professional logger and a fixture of the Deposit Lumberjack Festival — the town's fifty-year-old celebration of the trade, where he's competed for years and where the Finnerty family helps keep the tradition running.
